This is a project that focuses on the use of hydrogen gas in the glass production process to achieve decarbonization.
The European Horizon Project H2GLASS is an alliance of 23 partners from 8 European countries.
The Horizon Europe project H2 Glass will focus on using hydrogen gas in glass production, with the aim of reducing emissions during the manufacturing process.
This four-year project has a budget of 33 million euros and received funding of 24 million euros at the end of July 2022. The project has started the funding agreement process and plans to launch a series of research activities in January 2023.
The Italian Glass Research Center SSV is one of its members.
H2GLASS aims to create the technology stack required by glass manufacturers to achieve 100% hydrogen combustion in their production facilities, while considering emission limitations and safe operations, ensuring the required product quality.
Professional partners Steklarna Hrastnik, PTML Pilkington, Owens Corning and Stara Glass represent the latest level of hydrogen usage in the glass industry and will be an asset of H2GLASS.
The alliance also has some industrial and research institutions, including SINTEF Energy, SINTEF Industry, SINTEF Production, STAM, Steinbeis Innovation, We Plus, NTNU, University of Nottingham, Kemijski Institute, Fraunhofer, Aston University, Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Italian Glass Research Center SSV, SENER Italy's Univas and other glass producers like Vetrobalsamo and Zignago Vetro want to remain at the forefront of sustainable development technology.
H2GLASS will showcase a demonstration of the aluminum industry: together with Hydro Havrand, this project will demonstrate the transferability of basic solutions, emphasizing an energy intensive industry model similar to the manufacturing process of glass, thereby enhancing the project's impact.
The European glass and aluminum industries employ a total of 400000 employees, with a production value of 3.5 billion euros and corresponding emissions of approximately 21.5 million tons of carbon dioxide.
The innovation generated by H2GLASS has the potential to bring 10000 new job opportunities, unleashing revenue of 1-5 billion for the effective utilization of glass technology. It also has the potential to create over 17 billion euros in investment and 200000 new jobs for achieving green hydrogen, while reducing emissions by approximately 80%.
