Precautions when using broken glass in float glass production

1. Secondary accumulation: The refractory materials in the furnace will be corroded by glass liquid, increasing the proportion of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 in the broken glass. After remelting, there will be secondary accumulation, which increases the difficulty of homogenization and deepens the color of the finished glass.

 2. Secondary volatilization: After the broken glass is remelted, some easily volatile components such as boron oxide, zinc oxide, lead oxide, and alkali metal oxides will undergo secondary volatilization. For example, sodium oxide will be reduced by 0.20% after remelting, so it needs to be supplemented.

3. The difference between the surface of glass fragments and their internal components: There are many broken bonds on the surface of broken glass, which can quickly adsorb the atmosphere and water, forming a surface colloidal state, thereby causing differences in surface and internal components. If there is less effective convection during the melting process or the melting temperature is low, the finished glass will have line marks, and glass with more active chemical properties is more prone to these problems. When the use of glass fragments is excessive, the three factors mentioned above are the reasons that lead to uneven preparation and reduce the hardness and brittleness of the finished glass.

4. Reduction performance of glass liquid during the remelting process: When remelting broken glass, some easily volatile components will decompose into oxygen. When oxygen enters the broken glass, the glass liquid will overflow, causing the glass liquid to produce reducibility. In this case, the color of some glass components containing variable valence elements will change.

5. Clarification: A small amount of chemical gas will be mixed in the broken glass, and some secondary bubbles will be generated during the remelting process. If the amount of broken glass added is very large, the number of bubbles will increase, and the difficulty of clarification will also increase.
